On the way back home one day, the kids shouted out - ‘Hello - you like Spice Girls’? ‘Oh no’ I thought, I couldn’t believe they had got all the way to Romania.

They are all really surprised here that I have no religion. First they don’t understand that I don’t pray or go to Church, then they just stare at me open-mouthed. They seem to believe the whole world is Catholic. They thought I was joking when I said that it is quite normal in England to have no specific religion. Beverly has the same beliefs as me. It was so relaxing and reassuring to have someone the same who has encountered the same reactions. I feel, for the first time, lacking. I feel like the odd one out and want to believe to fit in.
